System Description: Stigma usually prevents people from gaining awareness and understanding of suicide. Talking candidly about suicide with parents and caregivers can be hard barrier to overcome when cultural stigma exist. Typical misconceptions or cultural beliefs discourage several from searching for remedy. Also, numerous educators and folks in helping professions are not completely convinced suicide is a wellness concern for African American communities. This educational coaching aims to raise awareness and understanding of suicidal behavior amongst African American adolescents (ages 14-24 years). It is also aimed supply folks with methods and resources to appropriately intervene with a young individual thinking about suicide. System Presenter: Bryan Evans is the Associate System Director for suicide prevention education programming at Mental Well being America of Eastern Missouri. Bryan facilitates the SuicidePREV (Prevention, Response, Education, and Victory) educational coaching for educators, parents, agency staff and faith communities. He completed a Masters of Social Function degree at Washington University-St. Louis, August 2010. His research include suicide and African Americans, and other marginalized populations.
