Suicide Prevention and Treatment

Suicide cases are increasing day by day. Studies are conducted and statistics are published so that proper actions can be taken to prevent suicide. These statistics are hard to believe.
If we talk of America, around 30,000 Americans commit suicide annually. This number is continuously on the rise especially among the youth. Deaths due to suicide are double than those due to HIV and AIDS. According to the World Health Organization depression is the chief cause of suicide. A person commits suicide every 16.2 minutes.
Suicides can be prevented. Efforts have to be made. Suicide prevention can be achieved through education, awareness and treatment. If you are attentive you can judge the intension of a person to suicide.  If the person talks about suicide, expresses a lot of anger, feels abused or trapped and has no hope to escape. If he has withdrawn himself from his family and friends, behaving abnormally mentally as well physically, searching for methods to die, thinking about death, contacting people he once loved, disposing away his precious things, acquiring weapon etc then it is a matter of worry. These are some signs and symptoms of people planning to commit suicide.  Such prospective suicides can be prevented.
People with such symptoms need to be cared for immediately. They need urgent mental and physical treatment by a health professional.
As soon as you feel that the person intends to suicide start asking him questions. It is better to ask some reasonable and direct questions like do you intend to die or commit suicide? If yes when do you plan to do so? Do you think this is the only solution to your problem? May be he plans to think again.
You can prevent suicide by a number of other ways. You can call 911 and take the person to the nearest emergency room.
If the person intending to commit suicide is your friend or family member do not hesitate in calling 911 with the fear that he will be upset, at least you will succeed in saving his life.
Never ridicule a person intending to commit suicide as this will not prevent suicide rather it might provoke him. This will be a dangerous act.
You must listen to the person with full attention and then try to convince him that there are professionals easily available who can help him. Once he agrees accompany him to an appropriate health professional.
You must remove all types of weapons or things which can be used for self destruction available close to the suicidal person. This will delay his intension and give you more time to take action.
